The Coat of Arms

Here is an example of a typical Coat of Arms

showing the parts that make it up.

Here, in the Coat of Arms of Canada, an example of "Supporters" is shown.

The Supporters are the Lion and the Unicorn  on each side of the shield

The "Blazon" is a heraldic description of Arms.

The blazon for the arms to the right would be as follows:

Blazon of Arms

Ermine on a bend gules three plates.

Translation: The first tincture named is the field of the arms. In this case it is "Ermine" one of the furs.   A "bend" is a broad band going the dexter chief corner to the sinster base.  This one is "gules" (red).  The three plates are represented by the discs on the bend.  The colour is not mentioned because a plate is always "argent" (silver).

Crest

A demi-lion holding an anchor proper.

Translation: The crest is the device on top of the arms, usually on a helmet.  A demi-lion is half a lion and it and the anchor are "proper" (natural colours).
